Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is home to half the number of mountain gorillas in Africa and is the only place where chimpanzees co-exist with mountain gorillas. This ancient forest in Uganda’s mountainous south-western corner boasts an impressive biodiversity with 350 birds, 310 butterflies, 200 trees, 51 reptiles, 88 moths and 120 mammals, including the rare and unforgettable mountain gorillas. Bwindi forest is divided into 4 sectors; Buhoma in the north, Ruhija in the east, Rushaga and Nkuringo in the south. Each sector has habituated gorilla families for gorilla tracking, if you are to track mountain gorillas in Bwindi forest you need to mind about a specific region where you are going as this will affect the accommodation to be booked.
This safari lasts for 3 days and 2 nights and it is can be accessed either by car or air transport; by air it can be from Entebbe airport or Kajjansi airstrip and by car it can be from Entebbe or Kampala. We travel to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park on the first day and on the second day you do gorilla tracking to see the mountain gorillas in their natural habitat and on the third day you travel back to Kampala or Entebbe airport to fly to your next destination.
On this 3 Day gorilla safari, we shall have to set off early in the morning from Kampala. The journey is about 8-9 hours of travel through the highlands of Kigezi that are covered with beauty of mist early in the morning then proceed through the beautiful western Uganda landscapes with local banana plantations and farms of cattle. On our way, we shall make a stopover at the Uganda’s Equator in a place called Kayabwe where we shall take photographs from there and have lunch at Agip Motel before proceeding with our journey. We shall arrive in Bwindi forest in the evening and check in at your lodge for dinner and overnight.
A mountain gorilla safari starts early after morning breakfast ready with your hiking boots, long sleeved shirt and trouser, long socks, rain gears, mineral water, garden gloves, insect repellent, sun glasses, a hat, a camera and packed lunch. Ready with all gorilla requirements including passport and gorilla permit, we drive to the park headquarters for registration and joining other clients for a gorilla trekking briefing about how to behave when you’re with mountain gorillas during your trek.
Gorilla trekking is a physical activity that requires a certain level of fitness, so once this is all done; you will be divided into 8 groups of people according to your level of fitness per gorilla family and those who need porters you will have to pay $15 and get one. After this, you walk to enter into the forest through the thick vegetation and undergrowth with your guides to find the gorillas which can take you from 1 hour to 8 hours of the day depending on their movements and location where the gorillas stayed the previous night.
The steeply forested landscape is rigorous dense but crisscrossed by numerous animal trails allowing access to tourists. During your trek, you are likely to spot other primates, bird species and rare tree species. Once you have found the gorillas, you will be allowed to spend only 1 hour with them before trekking back to the park headquarters.
The 1 hour you spend with these great creatures is indeed an extraordinary feeling being with them in their natural home as you take unforgettable photos and videos for your memorable experience. After enjoying your gorilla trekking experience, you trek back to the park headquarters to be awarded a certificate for participating in gorilla trekking and contributing to the conservation of mountain gorillas.
